At Rebuilding Detroit, we believe that creating stronger communities takes more than good intentions—it takes hard work, dedication, and people willing to roll up their sleeves and get involved. That's exactly what our team experienced during our 2025 volunteer day with Habitat for Humanity Detroit.
Founded by Advance Plumbing, Rebuilding Detroit was created to bring together businesses, organizations, skilled trades professionals, students, and community members who share a commitment to strengthening Detroit. Through volunteer efforts, partnerships, and community engagement, we strive to support projects that contribute to the city's continued growth and revitalization.
While every Habitat for Humanity volunteer day is rewarding, this year's project presented a unique challenge. Unlike projects focused on painting, finishing work, or cosmetic improvements, our team was assigned to help with the demolition phase of a home renovation.
The work was demanding from the moment we arrived.
Throughout the day, volunteers removed walls, tore down ceilings, and helped clear the space in preparation for the next stages of construction. The project required physical strength, teamwork, patience, and a willingness to tackle tasks outside many of our comfort zones.

By the end of the day, there was no question that this was one of the most physically demanding volunteer projects our team has participated in.
Demolition work often goes unnoticed when people think about home construction and renovation. Most people see the finished product—a beautiful home, a renovated room, or a family receiving the keys to their new house. What they don't always see is the challenging work that happens before rebuilding can begin.
Before new walls can be installed, old ones must come down. Before improvements can be made, existing structures often need to be carefully removed. The demolition phase lays the foundation for everything that follows, making it one of the most important steps in the renovation process.

Throughout the day, our volunteers worked together to tackle challenges as they arose. Some team members quickly adapted to using tools they had never handled before, while others put their construction knowledge and problem-solving skills to work. Every task required collaboration, communication, and trust.
The experience also gave us a greater appreciation for the work Habitat for Humanity Detroit does every day. Behind every completed home is an incredible amount of planning, labor, coordination, and community support. Projects like this remind us that transforming a house into a home is truly a team effort.
As a company that has served Detroit and the surrounding communities since 1920, Advance Plumbing understands the value of investing in the places where people live and work. Through Rebuilding Detroit, we are proud to support organizations like Habitat for Humanity Detroit that are creating opportunities for families and helping strengthen neighborhoods throughout the city.
Volunteer days like this are about more than construction projects. They are opportunities to build relationships, learn new skills, and contribute to something larger than ourselves. They remind us that meaningful change doesn't happen overnight—it happens through consistent effort, strong partnerships, and people who are willing to show up and help.
We are grateful to Habitat for Humanity Detroit for the opportunity to participate in this project and for the incredible impact they continue to make throughout our community.
While the walls and ceilings may have come down that day, the experience reinforced something important: rebuilding Detroit starts with people who are willing to put in the work.
We look forward to continuing our partnership with Habitat for Humanity Detroit and supporting their mission for years to come.
